The short version
- A controlled trial found one percussive massage treatment increased maximum ankle dorsiflexion range of motion by 5.4 degrees, an 18.4% improvement, with no change in maximum voluntary contraction.
- A 2026 meta-analysis of 12 randomised trials found no clear effect of percussive therapy on delayed onset muscle soreness (g = 0.14, p = 0.40) or on maximum voluntary contraction recovery.

When we wrote about soreness treatments, we said percussive devices had not been tested to the standard hands-on massage had, and that we would rather admit that than sell you one. They have since been tested a good deal more. Here is what came back, including the parts that do not flatter the device.
The effect that replicates: range of motion
Konrad and colleagues applied a Hypervolt device to the calf muscles and measured what happened. Maximum dorsiflexion range of motion increased by 5.4 degrees — an 18.4% improvement, effect size 1.36 — with no change in the control condition. Maximum voluntary contraction torque did not change after either treatment.
That is a large, clean acute effect, and the authors' framing is the right one: similar to a conventional massage from a therapist, range of motion can be increased by a handheld percussive treatment without affecting muscle strength. If your ankles are stiff before a squat session, this is a tool that does something measurable.
Ferreira and colleagues reached the same place from a wider view, screening 281 records and including 11 studies. Massage guns could be effective for improving flexibility in the iliopsoas, hamstrings, triceps surae and posterior chain, and were described as cost-effective instruments for reducing stiffness and improving range of motion and strength after a fatigue protocol.
The effect people buy them for: less convincing
Zhu and colleagues published a meta-analysis of 12 randomised controlled trials on percussive therapy after exercise-induced muscle damage, and graded certainty for each outcome.
- Countermovement jump recovery improved (g = 0.78, 95% CI 0.26 to 1.29) — low certainty.
- Creatine kinase fell (g = −0.87) — very low certainty.
- Maximum voluntary contraction recovery: no clear improvement (g = 0.12, 95% CI −0.10 to 0.34, p = 0.28) — moderate certainty.
- Delayed onset muscle soreness: no clear effect (g = 0.14, 95% CI −0.19 to 0.48, p = 0.40).
Note where the certainty is highest. The one outcome graded moderate is the one that found nothing. And an exploratory finding in that analysis deserves printing on the box: longer treatment was associated with higher soreness scores. The authors are careful to call the dose findings preliminary and not prescriptive, and we will be too. But "more is better" is not what the data suggests, and that is the instinct most people have with these devices.
The older evidence is friendlier and much smaller. Imtiyaz and colleagues randomised 45 women into three groups of 15 and applied either 50 Hz vibration for five minutes, 15 minutes of massage, or nothing, before eccentric exercise. Both treatments reduced soreness; massage restored concentric strength; vibration lowered lactate dehydrogenase at 48 hours. Fifteen people per arm, a pre-exercise protocol, and a vibration plate rather than a handheld gun. Worth knowing, not worth building a purchase on.
The warning nobody puts in the marketing
Ferreira's review found that in strength, balance, acceleration, agility and explosive activities, massage guns either produced no improvement or a decrease in performance, and concluded their use before those activities is not recommended. Ten of the eleven included studies carried a moderate risk of bias and one a high risk, so hold that loosely — but the direction matters if you are using a gun as a warm-up before jumping, sprinting or maxing out.
What we'd actually tell you
Buy one if you want a mobility tool you will actually use, because that is the job it does with the most consistent evidence and it does it in ninety seconds without booking anything. Use it on tight tissue before mobility work, and away from sessions where explosive output is the point.
Do not buy one believing it speeds tissue repair. The best-graded outcome in the pooled analysis found no clear effect on soreness, and the marker that did move — creatine kinase — is a protein that leaked out of muscle cells rather than a report from you. Do not go longer hoping for more. And if you find the thing genuinely pleasant, that is a legitimate reason to own it; we would just rather you bought it for the reason that is true.
Two framing notes. If your goal is feeling less wrecked tomorrow before a second session, cold water immersion has a much larger evidence base for that specific job, with a training-block trade-off attached. And if you are reaching for a device most days because you are constantly beaten up, the problem is upstream of your recovery tools — that is a deload question, not a percussion question, and no gadget resolves a scheduling error.
One safety line
Keep these off bone, joints, the neck and the abdomen, off any area that is numb, acutely injured, bruised or swollen, and away from varicose veins or a known clotting disorder. Percussion into an undiagnosed injury is a way to make it worse, and pain that does not settle within a few days is a clinician's question rather than a harder setting.
Good questions
Do massage guns actually reduce muscle soreness?
The best-graded evidence says no. A 2026 meta-analysis of 12 trials found no clear effect on delayed onset muscle soreness, and that null result carried higher certainty than the positive findings in the same analysis. Devices may still improve jump recovery and lower creatine kinase, but if reduced soreness is the reason you are buying one, the pooled data does not support the purchase.
How long should I use a massage gun on one muscle?
Less time than you think. An exploratory analysis found longer treatments were associated with higher soreness scores, and the range-of-motion trials produced large effects with brief applications. The authors explicitly warned against treating their dose findings as prescriptive thresholds. Working an area for many minutes because it feels productive is not supported, and may be counterproductive.
Should I use a massage gun before lifting?
Not before explosive work. A systematic review found that in strength, balance, acceleration, agility and explosive activities, massage guns either did not help or reduced performance, and recommended against pre-activity use for those. Before mobility work or on a stiff area you are trying to get range out of, it is a reasonable choice — the flexibility effect is the most consistent one in the literature.
Is a massage gun as good as a real massage?
For range of motion, the acute effect looks comparable — the percussive trial described its result as similar to conventional massage from a therapist. For soreness and perceived fatigue, hands-on massage has a substantially larger and better-quality evidence base. The gun's honest advantage is that it is available at 10pm in your living room, which is not nothing if it means you actually do it.
Will a massage gun help me recover faster between sessions?
Partly, and not in the way most people mean. Pooled data suggests explosive performance measures such as jump height come back somewhat faster, at low certainty. Maximum strength recovery did not clearly improve. If you have a second session the same day and jump output matters, there is a weak case. If you mean tissue repair, no device has been shown to speed that.
Are massage guns safe to use anywhere on the body?
No. Keep them off bone, joints, the neck and the abdomen, and off any area that is numb, acutely injured, bruised or swollen. Avoid them over varicose veins or if you have a clotting disorder. Percussing an undiagnosed injury is a good way to make it worse, and pain that has not settled after a few days belongs with a clinician rather than on a higher setting.
