The short version
- A Cochrane review of 15 trials in 718 participants found melatonin taken after a night shift may increase daytime sleep by 24 minutes and night-time sleep by 17 minutes, on low quality evidence.
- That review found no dose-response effect for melatonin between 1 and 10 mg, and no meaningful reduction in sleep onset latency at all.
- A second Cochrane review of 17 non-drug trials concluded it is not possible to determine whether shift workers' sleepiness can be reduced or their sleep improved by bright light, naps, exercise or sleep education.

Most sleep advice assumes your problem is behaviour. Shift work is the case where it plainly is not. You can do every single thing on the sleep hygiene list correctly and still sleep badly, because you are asking a circadian system to produce sleep at the hour it is built to produce alertness. Knowing that the tools are weak is more useful than being told to try harder.
The pharmacological evidence, honestly sized
The Cochrane review by Liira and colleagues covers 15 randomised placebo-controlled trials with 718 participants. Nine tested melatonin.
Melatonin at 1 to 10 mg taken after the night shift may increase daytime sleep length by 24 minutes (95% CI 9.8 to 38.9; seven trials, 263 participants) and night-time sleep by 17 minutes (95% CI 3.71 to 30.22). The evidence was graded low quality. There was no dose-response effect — 10 mg did not outperform 1 mg. And melatonin did not shorten sleep latency: the mean difference was 0.37 minutes, which is a rounding error.
That is the best-supported supplement option for this problem: about 24 extra minutes of daytime sleep, on low-quality evidence, with no reason to take a bigger dose. A separate 2022 systematic review of ten clinical trials in health personnel found melatonin at 1 to 10 mg associated with less daytime sleepiness, shorter sleep onset latency, fewer night-time awakenings and longer total sleep, and recommended it on the basis of low adverse effects — while noting great disparity in dose, follow-up and melatonin type, and small young samples. Read those two together and you get a real but modest tool, not a solution.
The review also found the prescription wakefulness agents, armodafinil and modafinil, reduce sleepiness by about one point on a ten-point scale in people diagnosed with shift work sleep disorder, with adverse events including severe skin reactions post-marketing. Zopiclone did not lengthen daytime sleep. Those are physician decisions, not shelf decisions.
The non-drug evidence is weaker still, and we should say so
The second Cochrane review, by Slanger and colleagues, covered 17 trials with 556 participants across bright light exposure, nap opportunities, and other interventions such as exercise and sleep education. Their conclusion is unusually blunt: given the methodological diversity, limited reporting, and very low to low quality of the evidence, it is not possible to determine whether shift workers' sleepiness can be reduced or their sleep length or quality improved with these interventions.
Bright light during the night reduced sleepiness by 0.83 points on the Stanford Sleepiness Scale across two comparable studies in 184 participants — very low quality evidence. Bright light plus sunglasses at dawn did not help. A single nap opportunity produced an 11.87 ms reduction in reaction time, also very low quality.
We are quoting the failures on purpose. The internet is full of confident shift-work protocols built out of exactly these studies, and the people who pooled them will not say they work.
The two things with the most useful signal
From the pooled data, the combination worth knowing is caffeine plus a pre-shift nap, which decreased sleepiness by 0.63 points on the Karolinska scale based on one trial. And the nap literature outside shift work has a specific and actionable finding here: during a simulated night shift, a 10-minute nap avoided sleep inertia entirely while a 30-minute nap left vigilance impaired 47 minutes after waking. If you are napping at 3am before going back on the floor, nap length is not a detail — it decides whether the nap helps or hurts for the rest of the shift.
The other thing we would put ahead of any supplement is alcohol. Drinking to get to sleep after a night shift is extremely common and it is the worst available option, because a nightcap fragments the second half of sleep at exactly the point when your daytime sleep is already fragile.
Where REST+ fits, precisely

On this evidence, the melatonin is the ingredient with a shift-work-specific case behind it, and that case is 24 minutes of extra daytime sleep on low-quality evidence with no dose-response. We would rather write that sentence than the one our competitors write.
Take it after the shift, at a consistent clock time, and do not scale the dose upward — the pooled data specifically found bigger doses did not buy more sleep.
What we'd actually tell you
Protect the room before you buy anything. Blackout, earplugs or white noise, phone off, and household agreement that your sleep window is not negotiable. Those are free and they address the two things that actually wake day sleepers.
Keep your sleep window at the same clock time on work days rather than flipping back and forth, because every flip is a new adaptation your body has to attempt and mostly fails. Use a short pre-shift nap and time your caffeine to the first half of the shift. Then add melatonin after the shift if you want the one supplement with pooled evidence behind it, at a low dose, and judge it over a month.
And take the medical route seriously. Shift work sleep disorder is a diagnosis, not a personality trait, and the treatments with the strongest data for it are prescriptions a doctor manages. If you are falling asleep driving home, that is not a supplement conversation. It is an urgent one.
Good questions
Does melatonin help night shift workers sleep during the day?
A little. Pooled Cochrane data across seven trials found melatonin after a night shift increased daytime sleep by about 24 minutes, on low quality evidence, and it did not shorten the time taken to fall asleep. That is the best-evidenced supplement option for shift work, and it is a modest one. Take it at a consistent time after the shift.
Should I take a bigger dose of melatonin for shift work?
No. The Cochrane review specifically found no dose-response effect across the 1 to 10 mg range studied, meaning 10 mg did not buy more sleep than 1 mg. Escalating gets you a larger dose still circulating when you need to be awake. Start low, keep the timing consistent, and judge the result over a month rather than a week.
Do the shift work protocols online actually work?
The researchers who pooled the underlying studies would not say so. A Cochrane review of 17 trials of bright light, naps, exercise and sleep education concluded it is not possible to determine whether these interventions reduce sleepiness or improve sleep, given very low to low quality evidence. Confident protocols are being built out of studies that do not support confidence.
Should I flip back to a normal schedule on days off?
Flipping repeatedly is the hardest version of this problem, because each switch asks your body for an adaptation it mostly fails to complete. Holding your sleep window at a similar clock time across work days is the more defensible approach. That said, the trial evidence on scheduling strategies is weak, and family life is a legitimate input to this decision.
Is a drink after a night shift a reasonable way to get to sleep?
It is the worst common option. Alcohol shortens sleep onset and then fragments the second half of the sleep period, which is already the fragile part of daytime sleep. It also worsens breathing during sleep. If getting to sleep after a shift is the problem, blackout, earplugs and a fixed sleep window will do more, and cost nothing.
When does shift work sleep trouble become a medical issue?
When it affects safety or persists despite a protected sleep window. Shift work sleep disorder is a recognised diagnosis, and the interventions with the strongest evidence for it are prescriptions a doctor manages, not supplements. If you are fighting sleep while driving home, treat that as urgent rather than as something to solve with a better bedtime routine.
