The short version
- In a 1999 respiration-chamber study of 10 healthy men, a green tea extract providing 50 mg caffeine and 90 mg EGCG per serving raised 24-hour energy expenditure by 4%, while the matched caffeine-only arm produced no effect.
- A 2011 meta-analysis of respiration-chamber studies found catechin-caffeine mixtures raised 24-hour energy expenditure by 428.0 kJ (4.7%) and caffeine alone by 429.1 kJ (4.8%) — effectively the same.
- 428 kJ is roughly 100 calories a day, about the same as twenty minutes of walking, and small enough for normal appetite variation to erase.

Green tea extract is the most defensible ingredient in the fat-loss aisle, which is a statement about the aisle. It does have a measurable metabolic effect, established in a respiration chamber rather than inferred from a cell line. The trouble starts when you look at the size of it, and at what happens when you take the caffeine out.
The famous study, read properly
Dulloo and colleagues, American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 1999. Ten healthy men, each spending 24 hours in a respiratory chamber on three separate occasions: green tea extract, caffeine alone, or placebo, taken at breakfast, lunch and dinner.
The extract raised 24-hour energy expenditure by 4% and dropped the respiratory quotient from 0.88 to 0.85, indicating a shift toward burning fat. Urinary noradrenaline excretion rose 40%. The dose was small — 50 mg of caffeine and 90 mg of EGCG per serving — and the matched caffeine-only arm produced no effect on energy expenditure or respiratory quotient at all.
That last detail is the paper's real contribution: catechins appeared to add something beyond the caffeine. It is the sentence that launched a thousand fat burners.
What happened when someone pooled the chambers
In 2011, Hursel and colleagues gathered every study measuring 24-hour energy expenditure in a respiration chamber after catechin-caffeine mixtures or caffeine alone. Six articles, eighteen conditions.
Catechin-caffeine mixtures increased 24-hour energy expenditure by 428.0 kJ (4.7%). Caffeine alone increased it by 429.1 kJ (4.8%).
Read those two numbers side by side. Once you pool the literature rather than resting on a single ten-man crossover, the catechins stop distinguishing themselves on energy expenditure. Where they did retain an edge was fat oxidation: 24-hour fat oxidation rose significantly with the mixtures (12.2 g, 16%) but not with caffeine alone (9.5 g, p = 0.11). Both worked dose-dependently, at roughly 0.53 kJ per milligram for the mixtures and 0.44 for caffeine.
And 428 kJ is about 100 calories a day — roughly a slice of bread, or twenty minutes of unremarkable walking. It is a real number produced by careful measurement, and it is well inside the range that a normal day's variation in appetite and fidgeting will erase without you noticing.
So did it show up on the scale?
Cochrane went looking in 2012, in trials of at least twelve weeks in overweight or obese adults. The studies split so sharply by geography that they could not be pooled together.
Six trials conducted outside Japan, 532 participants: mean difference in weight loss of -0.04 kg, confidence interval -0.5 to 0.4, p = 0.88. BMI, -0.2 kg/m², not significant. Waist circumference, -0.2 cm, not significant. The eight Japanese trials were too dissimilar to pool and ranged from -0.2 kg to -3.5 kg.
Cochrane's conclusion was that green tea preparations induce a small, statistically non-significant weight loss which is not likely to be clinically important, and no significant effect on maintaining weight loss.
A hundred extra calories a day burned. Forty grams lost over three months. Those two findings are not in conflict — they are what a hundred calories a day looks like once appetite quietly compensates.
The caveat we'd rather you heard from us
Green tea extract is one of the few supplement ingredients with a documented liver-injury signal serious enough to change a monograph. The United States Pharmacopeia reviewed the evidence in 2020 and found published adverse-event case reports associating hepatotoxicity with EGCG intakes from 140 mg to around 1,000 mg a day, with substantial variation between individuals in susceptibility, possibly genetic. Animal and human data indicated that repeated bolus doses taken while fasting significantly increase catechin bioavailability, likely by saturating first-pass elimination.
USP's response was a cautionary labelling requirement: do not take on an empty stomach, take with food, do not use if you have a liver problem, and stop and see a practitioner if you develop abdominal pain, dark urine or jaundice.
Note where that lands. The fasted morning capsule — the way almost every fat burner instructs you to take it — is precisely the pattern the bioavailability data warns about.
What we'd actually tell you
Drinking green tea is fine and always was. Concentrated extract is a different product with a different risk profile and a benefit measured in the low hundreds of kilojoules.
If you buy one, take it with food, never fasted, and know that most of what you feel from it is caffeine — which is worth understanding before you decide what a thermogenic is actually selling you. If your goal is appetite rather than expenditure, protein's satiety effect is a larger, cheaper and better-replicated lever than anything in this ingredient's file.
Good questions
Does green tea extract burn fat?
It raises 24-hour fat oxidation by around 12 grams and energy expenditure by about 100 calories a day in chamber studies, so technically yes and practically almost no. Across twelve-week trials outside Japan the pooled weight difference was 0.04 kg. A hundred calories a day is real physiology that your appetite absorbs without you noticing.
Is green tea extract just caffeine?
Mostly, on the measure people care about. When six respiration-chamber studies were pooled, catechin-caffeine mixtures raised daily energy expenditure by 428 kJ and caffeine alone by 429 kJ. The catechins kept an edge on fat oxidation specifically, but if you are buying it for the metabolic rate claim, you are largely buying caffeine at a markup.
How much EGCG is safe?
There is no single safe number, which is the honest answer. Case reports of liver injury span EGCG intakes from 140 mg to about 1,000 mg a day, with large individual differences in susceptibility that may be genetic. The USP's practical guidance is to take it with food rather than fasted, and to stop immediately if you develop abdominal pain, dark urine or jaundice.
Should I take green tea extract on an empty stomach?
No. This is the one instruction we would override on most fat burner labels. Repeated bolus doses while fasting significantly increase catechin absorption, apparently by saturating the body's first-pass elimination, and that is the exposure pattern associated with the liver injury reports. Take it with a meal or do not take it.
Is drinking green tea as good as the capsules?
For safety, better. For the metabolic effect, the chamber studies used concentrated extract, so brewed tea delivers less. That trade is worth making. The effect size you are giving up is around a hundred calories a day, and the risk you are avoiding is the one that changed a pharmacopeia monograph.
Why doesn't LUVO make a green tea weight-loss product?
We sell green tea extract inside a caffeinated pre-meal formula and we are explicit on that page that the effect is small. What we will not do is build a product around a weight-loss promise, because the Cochrane result is 0.04 kg and we would have to write around it. If an ingredient needs careful phrasing to sound impressive, it is not impressive.
