The short version
- The recommended daily iodine intake for non-pregnant, non-lactating adults is 150 micrograms, and excess intake can cause either hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism depending on the individual.

Most minerals have a comfortable plateau: below it you are short, above it you excrete the surplus, and the middle is wide. Iodine does not work that way. It has a genuine window, and overshooting it can produce hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism depending on the person — which means the symptoms of taking too much can look like the symptoms of taking too little.
This is unusual enough that it is worth understanding before you buy anything containing kelp.
Why the ceiling exists
Iodine is the raw material for thyroid hormone. When a large iodine load arrives, the thyroid temporarily shuts down organification to protect itself — the Wolff-Chaikoff effect — and normally escapes from that block within days. In people who fail to escape, the block persists and hypothyroidism follows. In others, particularly those with nodular thyroid tissue, a load instead drives excess hormone production, the Jod-Basedow phenomenon.
A review of the consequences of excess iodine puts the recommended daily intake for non-pregnant, non-lactating adults at 150 micrograms and notes that intake above that threshold is generally well tolerated — but that in susceptible individuals, including those with pre-existing thyroid disease, the elderly, fetuses and neonates, the risk of iodine-induced thyroid dysfunction is increased, and the excess iodine source is often not obvious.
A 2024 review of the risks of iodine excess reaches the same conclusion and adds a candid one: there is a need for more data to define safe upper limits for iodine intake, particularly in high-risk populations. That is an unusually honest statement from an endocrinology review and it is the correct level of certainty to hold.
Where accidental overshoot comes from
Not from iodised salt. From sea vegetables, where the content is both enormous and wildly variable.
A large study measured iodine in three commercially important edible North Atlantic seaweeds and calculated how much dried biomass would meet the recommended daily intake. For Saccharina latissima, a brown kelp, the answer was 32mg of dried biomass. For Alaria esculenta, 283mg. For Palmaria palmata, a red alga, 2,149mg. Iodine content in the kelp varied significantly by sampling location and biomass source.
Read those numbers again. Thirty-two milligrams of dried kelp is a pinch. A one-gram serving of that species would supply roughly thirty times the recommended daily intake. The same weight of the red alga would supply about half of it. Two products that both say "sea vegetable" on the front can differ by a factor of nearly seventy in the nutrient that matters, and the same species varies by harvest site.
This is why the useful question about any seaweed product is not which species it is but how many micrograms of iodine are in a serving, stated as a number. If a label does not tell you, it cannot be added to your daily total, and an unknown quantity of the one nutrient with a narrow window is not a good thing to be taking. Hold every brand to that, ours included.
The other end of the range is not solved either
It would be easy to read the above as "iodine is dangerous, avoid it". That would be wrong, particularly for women. An analysis of nine NHANES cycles from 2001 to 2020 found the median urinary iodine concentration among US women of childbearing age declined from 135.0 to 103.5 micrograms per litre, with the proportion below 100 micrograms per litre rising from 37.6% to 47.7%. Median values for pregnant and lactating women fell below the adequate range in the more recent periods.
Iodine requirements rise in pregnancy and lactation, which is why iodine belongs on the short list of things that genuinely matter in a prenatal vitamin — and why the supplement being an unlabelled kelp extract rather than a stated dose is a real problem in that context specifically.
Who should be careful, and what careful means
If you have any diagnosed thyroid condition — Hashimoto's, Graves', nodules, a history of thyroid surgery or radioiodine — iodine supplementation is a clinical decision, not a wellness one. Both directions of thyroid dysfunction are on the table and your endocrinologist should make the call.
For everyone else, the practical version is short. Count your sources rather than each one individually: iodised salt, dairy, seafood, a multivitamin, and any sea vegetable product. Prefer products that state iodine in micrograms per serving. Treat daily high-dose kelp as a decision rather than a habit, and be sceptical of any product using "trace minerals" to avoid printing a number, which is the same problem as any unquantified label claim and one that third-party testing does not fix on its own.
What we'd actually tell you
Iodine is not a supplement to take enthusiastically. It is one to get right. For most people eating a mixed diet in a country that iodises salt, the amount in a standard multivitamin plus food is enough, and adding a concentrated kelp product on top is where the risk sits.
If you take a sea vegetable product for the wider mineral profile rather than for iodine specifically, that is a defensible reason — as long as you know the iodine number and it fits inside your day.
Good questions
Can too much iodine cause hypothyroidism?
Yes, and it can cause hyperthyroidism in other people. A large iodine load temporarily suppresses thyroid hormone production, and in individuals who fail to escape that block, hypothyroidism follows. In people with nodular thyroid tissue, the same load can instead drive excess hormone production. This is why symptoms of too much iodine can resemble symptoms of too little.
Is kelp a safe way to get iodine?
It is the least predictable way. Only about 32mg of dried Saccharina kelp supplies a full day's iodine, and content varies significantly with harvest location. A one-gram serving of the wrong species could deliver many times the recommended intake. If a kelp product does not state iodine in micrograms per serving, you cannot count it, and an uncountable dose of iodine is not a good idea.
Should I take iodine if I have Hashimoto's or another thyroid condition?
That is a decision for your endocrinologist, not for a supplement label. Pre-existing thyroid disease is specifically listed among the conditions that raise the risk of iodine-induced thyroid dysfunction, and both hypothyroid and hyperthyroid responses are possible. Bring any supplement containing kelp or iodine to your next appointment before you start it.
Do I need an iodine supplement if I use iodised salt?
Most people eating a mixed diet in a country that iodises salt do not. Between salt, dairy, seafood and a standard multivitamin, the usual intake is adequate. Pregnancy and lactation raise requirements and are the main exception, and recent US survey data show median iodine levels in women of childbearing age have been declining.
How would I know if I'm getting too much iodine?
Often you would not, which is the difficulty. The excess source is frequently not obvious to the person taking it, and thyroid symptoms are non-specific in both directions — fatigue, weight change, temperature sensitivity. If you take a concentrated sea vegetable product and something has changed, a thyroid function test is a more useful next step than guessing.
Is sea moss a high-iodine seaweed?
Red algae generally carry far less iodine than brown kelps, but that is a statement about the measured species rather than a guarantee about a specific product. The only reliable answer is the number on the label. Ask any brand selling a sea vegetable product, including us, for iodine in micrograms per serving, and if there is no number, treat it as an unknown.
