The short version
- Adding electrolytes alone to water, in the concentration range of sports drinks, did not consistently improve fluid retention versus plain water in 19 healthy adults.
- Thirteen percent of 488 Boston Marathon runners finished with hyponatraemia, and the composition of the fluids they drank was not associated with the risk; drinking to substantial weight gain was.
- Across 1,944 sweat tests in 1,304 subjects, statistical models explained only 17% to 23% of the variation in whole-body sweat sodium concentration.
- Dietary sodium intake, exercise duration, humidity and relative VO2max had no significant association with sweat sodium concentration in that dataset.

An entire aisle now exists on the premise that water is somehow insufficient. It is a good premise for a business, because it converts a free thing into a subscription. It is a much narrower premise physiologically.
What happens when you actually test it
The beverage hydration index compares how much of a drink you retain against water as the standard. Millard-Stafford and colleagues had 19 healthy young adults drink a litre of each of four beverages in randomised order: deionised water, electrolytes only, carbohydrate plus electrolytes, and a dipeptide plus electrolytes, then tracked urine output and body mass every hour for four hours.
The finding worth knowing: the addition of electrolytes alone, in the range found in sports drinks, did not consistently improve the hydration index versus water. What did increase retention was combining electrolytes with carbohydrate or with dipeptides. Interestingly, plain water also produced more reports of stomach bloating than the carbohydrate-containing drinks.
So if the pitch is "electrolytes help you hold onto water", the controlled answer at rest, in healthy young adults, is: not on their own, not reliably.
Where the actual risk sits, and it is not where you think
Of 488 Boston Marathon runners who gave a finish-line blood sample, 13% had hyponatraemia — a serum sodium of 135 mmol/L or below — and 0.6% had critical hyponatraemia at 120 or below. On multivariate analysis, the risks were substantial weight gain during the race (odds ratio 4.2), a finishing time over four hours (odds ratio 7.4 versus under 3:30) and extremes of body mass index.
Here is the line the sachet industry does not quote: the composition of the fluids ingested was not associated with hyponatraemia. Runners drinking sports drinks were not protected. The problem was volume. The international consensus statement on exercise-associated hyponatraemia makes the same point in guidance form, and it is the reason "drink to thirst" replaced "drink as much as you can" in serious endurance advice.
Low sodium during long exercise is a real and occasionally fatal problem. It is caused by drinking too much of anything, and a sachet that encourages you to drink more is not obviously the solution.
You cannot guess your sweat sodium, and neither can a brand
Gatorade's own research institute compiled 1,944 sweat tests from 1,304 subjects to work out what predicts sweat sodium concentration. The best model explained 17% to 23% of the variation. Energy expenditure and season of the year were the strongest factors. There was no significant effect of age group, ethnicity, relative humidity, exercise duration, pre-exercise urine specific gravity, exercise fluid balance, or dietary sodium intake.
Read that as a consumer and it means something specific. A quiz that asks how salty your sweat tastes and how much you sweat cannot tell you your sodium losses, because the researchers with 1,944 lab measurements could only account for a fifth of the variance.
The bit where hydration does matter
None of this means fluid is irrelevant. In 25 young women, dehydration averaging 1.36% of body mass significantly worsened vigour-activity, fatigue-inertia and total mood disturbance, alongside self-reported task difficulty, concentration and headache. Most cognitive measures were unaffected. Being a bit under-watered makes you feel worse without necessarily making you perform worse — which is exactly the kind of effect that gets mistaken for needing a product when it needed a glass of water.
Who should carry one
- Anyone exercising hard for more than about 90 minutes, especially in heat, where you are replacing meaningful sodium losses rather than topping up a deficit you do not have.
- People with jobs in heat — kitchens, roofing, plant rooms — who sweat for hours rather than for a session.
- Anyone losing fluid through illness, where oral rehydration is a medical intervention with a proper evidence base behind it.
- People on very low-carbohydrate diets in the first weeks, where sodium losses genuinely rise.
Who should not bother
If you sat at a desk, walked to lunch and did 45 minutes in a gym, a sachet is a flavoured expense. The honest version of that product for you is water plus normally salted food.
And if you are buying electrolytes to fix an afternoon energy dip, the mechanism does not connect. Look at sleep hours and caffeine timing first. If you want a supplement with an ergogenic file rather than a hydration one, dietary nitrate has more randomised evidence behind it than any sachet does — with its own set of caveats.
Good questions
Do I need electrolytes if I work out for an hour?
Almost certainly not. For a session of about an hour in normal conditions, water plus normally salted meals replaces what you lost. Controlled testing found electrolytes alone did not reliably improve fluid retention over plain water. The threshold where a sachet starts earning its place is roughly 90 minutes of hard work, or heat, or both.
Can you drink too much electrolyte drink?
Yes, and this is the part the category downplays. Exercise-associated hyponatraemia is driven by total fluid volume, not by what is dissolved in it. In the Boston Marathon study, the composition of fluids ingested was not associated with hyponatraemia, while gaining weight during the race quadrupled the odds. Drinking to thirst is safer than drinking to a schedule.
How do I know if I'm a salty sweater?
Realistically, you do not, and neither does a quiz. In a dataset of 1,944 sweat tests, the best statistical model explained under a quarter of the variation in sweat sodium, and dietary sodium, exercise duration and humidity showed no association at all. If it genuinely matters for your sport, a lab sweat test is the only way to know.
Will electrolytes help with tiredness at my desk?
No, unless you are actually dehydrated, in which case water will do it. Mild dehydration does worsen mood and fatigue ratings, so fluid is worth ruling out. But sodium and potassium are not the limiting factor for someone sitting in an office, and no hydration trial supports the energy framing this category is often sold with.
Are electrolyte sachets a waste of money?
For most desk-based buyers on most days, yes. For endurance athletes past 90 minutes, outdoor workers in heat, people recovering from a stomach bug and people in the early weeks of a very low-carbohydrate diet, no. The mistake is treating a genuinely useful product for a narrow group as a daily requirement for everyone.
Is a sports drink better than water for hydration?
Slightly, and mainly because of the carbohydrate rather than the electrolytes. In beverage hydration index testing, carbohydrate plus electrolytes retained more fluid than water at two hours, while electrolytes alone did not consistently beat water. If you want the retention benefit, the sugar is doing much of the work.
