WHY IT WORKS

After 40, muscle is something you keep on purpose.

Adults start shedding muscle mass from roughly the fourth decade onward, and it happens quietly - nothing hurts, nothing announces itself, the number on the scale often doesn't move. Two things are known to work against that drift: resistance training, and enough protein to build with. BUILD is the second one. It does not replace the first.

Nine, not three

LUVO's REBUILD gives you branched-chain aminos and says plainly that three amino acids are not nine. BUILD is the other half of that sentence. Whey is a complete protein - all nine essential amino acids, in the ratios your body cannot make for itself.

Protein is the macro people quietly drop

Appetite tends to shrink with age while protein needs hold steady or rise. 22 g in a shaker is the least effortful way to close a gap you'd otherwise close with a second chicken breast you don't want to eat.

Fiber in a protein powder

Solnul resistant potato starch is a prebiotic fiber, and it's an odd thing to find in a protein tub. It has its own published human trial - at 3.5 g per day it fed Bifidobacterium and Akkermansia over four weeks. We are honest below about what our label does and doesn't tell you.

It works with the training, not instead of it

In older adults, protein supplementation moved lean mass and grip strength only in the trials that also included resistance exercise. Without the training, the pooled effect wasn't there. Buy the powder if you're doing the work, or plan to.

The Research

Whether this works depends on what you already eat and whether you lift.

Two of these three papers ask the same question about older adults and protein and come back with different answers - the disagreement is the useful part, so we've printed both. The third covers the fiber. Read all three, not just the flattering one.

  1. +0.54 kg

A meta-analysis of 28 randomized controlled trials in adults with a mean age of 50 or older. Pooled across everything, extra protein did not significantly change lean mass or strength. In the trials that also used resistance exercise, protein produced significantly greater appendicular lean mass (+0.54 kg) and handgrip strength than lower-protein controls. In this pooled data the protein effect appears alongside resistance exercise and not without it. One more thing from the same paper, which we'd rather print than bury: on subgroup analysis, that lean-mass effect showed up only in sarcopenic or frail participants. BUILD is aimed at people who are neither, so this trial is weaker support for our buyer than the headline number makes it look.

  2. Nothing moved

36 trials, 1,682 non-frail community-dwelling older adults. Protein supplementation produced no significant change in lean body mass, muscle cross-sectional area, strength, gait speed or chair-rise ability - and no added benefit on top of resistance training either. The authors flag the likely reason: most participants were already eating enough protein. This is the population BUILD actually sells to, which makes it the strongest argument against buying BUILD, and it is a good one.

  3. 3.5 g

A three-arm randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of Solnul resistant potato starch in healthy adults. After four weeks, the 3.5 g per day arm showed significantly greater increases in Bifidobacterium and Akkermansia than placebo, with fewer diarrhea- and constipation-associated bowel movements. The 7 g arm behaved much like the 3.5 g arm.

Two scoops in cold water, on the days you lift and the days you don't.

1

Two scoops, cold water

One serving is 2 scoops into 8 to 12 oz of cold water. Shake it properly - 15 seconds, not three. Cold water and a full shake are the difference between smooth and chalky.

2

Put it where the gap is

Breakfast if you're someone who skips it, mid-afternoon if that's your thin patch, after training if that's when a real meal isn't happening. The daily total matters more than the clock.

3

Lift something, twice a week

This is the part that does the work. In the older-adult trials, protein moved lean mass and grip strength only where resistance exercise was part of the protocol. Two sessions a week is a defensible floor.

How to Use How to use BUILD.

Add one serving (2 scoops) to 8-12 oz (240-355 ml) of cold water. Blend or shake thoroughly.

Use once daily, or as needed to reach your own daily protein target. BUILD is designed to sit alongside food, not to replace meals.

Cold water, always Whey clumps in warm liquid. Cold water, then powder, then shake - in that order - gives you the cleanest mix in a plain shaker without a blender ball.
Work out your actual target Common guidance for people doing resistance training lands somewhere around 1.2 to 1.6 g of protein per kg of bodyweight per day - treat that as a starting range, not a rule; the FAQ below gives the paper behind the top of it. Add up what you already eat first. You may only need one scoop, or none.
Ease into the fiber If you don't eat much fiber day to day, start with a half serving for the first few days. Resistant starch ferments in the colon, and your gut bacteria appreciate a warning.
Milk, oat milk, oatmeal, yogurt Water is the label direction and the cleanest taste. But there's nothing wrong with stirring a serving into oats or blending it with milk if that's what gets it into you consistently.
Warnings Warnings & safety

Contains milk. This is a real allergen.

Whey is a dairy protein. BUILD contains milk and is not suitable for anyone with a milk allergy - full stop. It also contains lactose: whey concentrate carries meaningfully more than isolate, and BUILD uses both. Most people who are lactose intolerant handle a whey shake without trouble, but if you are highly sensitive, this is not the protein powder for you, and we'd rather tell you before you order than after.

The Solnul amount is not disclosed on our label

Solnul is listed in the blend, but the label does not state how many grams per serving. So we will not tell you that you are getting the 3.5 g studied in the published trial, because we cannot show you that you are. Treat the fiber as a welcome addition to a protein powder, not as a reason to buy one.

If your diet already covers it, this is convenience

A protein powder is a delivery format, not an ingredient your body can't get elsewhere. If you already hit your daily protein target from food, BUILD adds convenience and a shaker you can carry - it does not add a new effect. In non-frail older adults who were already eating enough, supplementation moved none of the measured outcomes.

Talk to your doctor, and keep to the serving

Speak with a healthcare professional before use if you are pregnant or nursing, have a medical condition, take prescription medication, or have been advised to manage your protein or fluid intake. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Keep out of reach of children. Do not use if the safety seal is damaged or missing.

Good Questions

Everything you might be wondering about BUILD (VANILLA).

How is BUILD different from REBUILD? +

REBUILD is branched-chain amino acids: three aminos, plus glutamine, for the gaps around a session. Its own page says three amino acids are not nine, and that is exactly right. BUILD is the complete protein - all nine essential amino acids in one 22 g serving. If you only own one of the two, own this one. REBUILD is the accessory; BUILD is the raw material.

I'm 54 and I don't lift. Will this do anything? +

Honestly, probably not much on its own. The 2022 meta-analysis in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found protein moved lean mass and grip strength in older adults only where resistance exercise was part of the trial - and on subgroup analysis the lean-mass effect was confined to sarcopenic or frail participants. Without the training, the pooled effect disappeared. If you're not training yet, start with two sessions a week of something loaded and let the protein support that. The powder without the work is an expensive drink.

How much protein do I actually need? +

Common guidance for people doing resistance training lands somewhere around 1.2 to 1.6 g per kg of bodyweight per day. The number at the top of that range comes from Morton and colleagues' 2018 systematic review, meta-analysis and meta-regression in the British Journal of Sports Medicine (PMID 28698222), which found protein supplementation increased gains in fat-free mass during resistance training in healthy adults, with the meta-regression putting the point where further protein stopped adding fat-free mass at about 1.6 g/kg/day. Worth knowing: the confidence interval around that breakpoint was wide, so read 1.6 as an approximate ceiling rather than a precise one. Add up your food first. If you're already there, a powder is convenience rather than a new effect - and we'd rather you know that.

Why is there fiber in a protein powder? +

Because it's a sensible place to put some. Solnul is a resistant potato starch - a prebiotic that survives the small intestine and gets fermented in the colon. In its own randomized, placebo-controlled trial, 3.5 g a day increased Bifidobacterium and Akkermansia over four weeks. Our label doesn't disclose the per-serving amount, so we won't claim you're getting the studied dose. It's a bonus, not the reason to buy.

I'm lactose intolerant. Can I use this? +

Maybe. BUILD is whey, so it contains milk and it contains lactose. Isolate is filtered to very little; concentrate carries more, and BUILD uses both. Plenty of lactose-intolerant people drink whey with no issue at these amounts. If you react to a glass of milk, start with a half serving and see. If you have a milk allergy rather than an intolerance, do not use this product at all.

Vanilla or chocolate - is there any difference besides taste? +

None. Same formula, same 22 g of protein, same blend, same Solnul, same stevia leaf. Only the natural flavors change. Pick the one you'll actually finish, because the powder that stays in the cupboard has an effect size of zero.
